Aquatic Swimmer, Terrestrial Runner, and Aerial Glider – A Nearly Limitless Reptile
Earth is teeming with countless animals, diverse in species, with fish swimming in the water, rabbits running on the ground, and birds flying in the sky. They have different personalities and possess specific abilities. However, there is one animal that is exceptionally formidable, capable of swimming, moving quickly on land, and gliding through the air—virtually without limits. That animal is the water monitor, a remarkably 'tough' reptile.

The water monitor is the largest snake in the world, with a length reaching up to 8 meters and a weight exceeding 130 kilograms, its body is covered in muscles. When a species is the largest within its kind, it surely has its own special characteristics. As the largest snake, the water monitor is also one of the most mysterious and legendary animals, rarely seen by humans. For scientists, it is essentially a mystery, like exploring a new planet.
The water monitor is a world-class killer, capable of devouring crocodiles up to 1.5 to 2 meters in length. Its teeth are like needles, with teeth arranged in rows and tilted backward towards the throat, so when it bites a prey, the prey has absolutely no chance of escape. Once a prey is bitten by the water monitor, it will use its strong muscles to wrap around the prey repeatedly, then gradually constrict, causing the prey to stop breathing, and even crush vital organs.
The water monitor is certainly not an 'intelligent' animal with 'strong arms and simple head.' When it senses that the prey is no longer struggling, when the heartbeat stops, it will not exert any more force. The water monitor's internal organs can move, which allows it to swallow huge prey. Once the prey enters its digestive tract, the powerful acids and enzymes inside will dissolve the entire prey.

Due to its large size, the water monitor can only be half full after eating a 'fat' prey. It can survive for several months without eating after a full meal. It inhabits swampy areas, and its enormous body relies on water buoyancy to support its weight. Therefore, water monitors are excellent swimmers. Besides swimming quickly in the water, the water monitors can also move quickly on land, which is due to the scales on its body.
The scales on the water monitor's body are interlocked and point backward, allowing it to move quickly on land or in water by reducing friction. By observing its abdomen, we can better understand the movement of this snake. The scales on its abdomen are very flat and wide, which can grip the ground, allowing the water monitor to pull itself forward and act in a classic roundabout way.
The evolution of the water monitor's movement allows it to appear in almost every corner of the Earth. For example, it can snake forward in the desert and also swim in the water, and even glide in the air. There is a documentary called 'Swimming with the Water Monster' in the United States, which once filmed the water monitor gliding in the air, which was shocking and made people unwilling to believe their eyes.

As a top predator, the water monitor has few enemies besides humans. It rarely attacks humans, and there have been only a few cases of eating people worldwide in the past 10 years, but the water monitors slaughtered annually reach 60 tons. Almost everywhere the water monitors live, they are persecuted by humans, which is not surprising, considering this snake can easily eat humans' livestock, and humans are naturally afraid of snakes.
