Yangzhou Spring is Too Beautiful! Large Groups of Wintering Birds "linger" and Don't Leave
In the north fishing ground, there are several fish ponds with an area of nearly 100 acres, and carp are raised in them. In recent years, these carp ponds have attracted all kinds of waterfowl. And this spring, flocks of overwintering ducks, black-winged long-legged sandpipers and other birds “linger” here, becoming a local scenic spot.

The fishermen introduced that these fish ponds are the most lacking in spring, summer, autumn and winter, except for the carp in the water, but various birds. “Birds come to visit every day.” Yangzhou bird enthusiasts also noticed that last winter, there were flocks of green-winged ducks staying here for the winter, and now that spring has come, they “linger” here.
This group of green-winged ducks is often swimming in the fish ponds, sometimes circling in the air, sometimes flying into nearby peach orchards “coming and going many times a day.” The workers also said that it was the first time they discovered that wild ducks were present. “Before, there were many birds, we didn’t recognize them much, but when the ducks came, they looked similar to domestic ducks, and we knew they were ducks immediately.”
Besides the overwintering ducks, there are many other birds
The fish farm is the closest to Yangzhou's urban area, and it is a good bird-watching point every year, and many bird enthusiasts come here to take pictures. Now, besides the green-winged ducks, there are red-billed gulls, black-winged long-legged sandpipers, white-throated grass-eared sandpipers, white storks and other species of birds. Especially the black-winged long-legged sandpipers, they are in large numbers and “high in appearance and good figure,” which is the “natural model” for bird enthusiasts.
And the white storks, when they are full, they will stand in a row by the fish pond, motionless.
Birds treat ornamental fish as food, the fish farm never harms them
The fish ponds raise various ornamental carp, and these carp also attract various fish-eating birds, such as white storks, gray herons, black-breasted bulettes, azure-winged prions, roseate spoonbills and other frequent visitors. In summer, roseate spoonbills will use this place as a breeding base, with the most at 100+ roseate spoonbills. The workers said that only one roseate spoonbill eats one carp a day, and it will lose more than 100 carp a day. Now there are more than 10 white storks staying here “This white stork is a relatively large individual, and one eats several carp a day.” Recently, it has cost more than 100 carp a day.
Although the loss is great, the workers said that the fish farm owner has given an explanation, and it cannot harm these birds “When the birds arrive in large numbers, they will shout a few times to drive them away, but basically it doesn’t work, and after a short time, (the birds) will fly back.”

Currently, many migratory birds remain in Yangzhou. Bird enthusiast said that as the temperature rises, they will leave Yangzhou and head north.
