Famous ‘Fishermen’ of Nature Appear in Longquanshan! Green Herons Detected in Winter at Longquanshan Mountain
Recently, staff of the Fujian Longquanshan National Nature Reserve Bureau detected a relatively rare waterbird – the Green Heron, which is considered one of the most beautiful among herons. Following consultation with experts from the Fujian Birdwatching Association, it was learned that Green Herons are scarce in Fujian, and their appearance in winter is even rarer.

The Green Heron is a small wading bird with a green-black forehead, crown, top of the head, and eye stripe. The crown extends from the top of the head to the lower back of the neck, with the last feather being particularly long. The nape, sides of the neck, and cheek markings are gray; the forehead and throat are white. The back and shoulders are covered in narrow, long, copper-green spear-shaped feathers that extend straight to the tail. All spear-shaped feathers have fine gray-white markings.
Shy in nature, they always hide stealthily in dark places, without a sound, standing on the low branches of trees or shrubs with their necks retracted, rarely moving unless disturbed. Even if threatened, they often first stretch their necks to look around, then slowly beat their wings and fly along the shore to a more secluded dark place nearby.

Listed as a terrestrial wild animal of important ecological, scientific, and social value, and included in the 2016 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species – LC (Least Concern).

Recently, a man who appeared in a viral video using popcorn to fish was a Green Heron. Green Herons sometimes throw insects into the water to catch fish that eat insects.
