Running into a Hard Patch! Lion Tried to Eat a Turtle, Failed After Chaotic Gnawing Without Progress, Eventually Licked the Shell
As the top predator on the African savanna, the lion’s diet is incredibly diverse: from large animals like giraffes, hippos, and elephants, to smaller ones such as birds and lizards, practically anything that can satisfy its hunger. However, lions sometimes find themselves unable to subdue certain animals, such as turtles.
Recently, 64-year-old wildlife photographer John Sampson captured a series of lions attempting to hunt turtles in the Zambezi River downstream National Park in Zambia, fully showcasing the remarkable defensive capabilities of turtles.
Initially, a lion was strolling across the savanna with other lions in its pride. Suddenly, it spotted a turtle slowly passing by. Seeing this ‘moving piece of meat,’ the lion instantly became alert, and it rushed forward, hugging the turtle and starting to gnaw on it.
Without a doubt, at the moment the lion hasn’t yet contacted the turtle, the turtle has already retreated into its shell. Although the lion’s teeth are sharp, the turtle’s shell is incredibly hard. The lion bit and bit, up and down, left and right, and after a fruitless attempt, it made no progress.
This is truly a ‘tough nut’ to crack! The lion thought to itself: As a supreme ruler of the savanna, I have eaten every animal, yet I cannot subdue this tiny turtle. The lion became increasingly frustrated and angry, with no solution, and it gnashed its teeth at the turtle, hoping to scare it out.
Lion: What are you waiting for?
And what about the turtle? Let me remain undisturbed.
Soon, the lion became tired and wanted to rest; it put its paws on the shell, staring intently at the turtle with a desperate expression, looking quite pitiful.
Lion: Please come out, I’m starving!
It couldn’t be without any gain, so the lion stared at the turtle for a while, performing a comical action: licking the shell.
Lion: I didn’t get any turtle meat, but I licked the shell.
Soon, the lion realized that licking it couldn’t satisfy its cravings. It began to manipulate the turtle again. Once again, it found no breakthrough. Finally, the lion was too exhausted to continue, lying on the ground in a dejected pose.
The lion’s abandonment of the attack gave the turtle an opportunity. While the lion was not paying attention, it quickly pulled its head and limbs out of the shell, attempting to escape. However, the noise was quickly detected by the lion, who immediately rose from the ground and attacked the turtle once again… The situation returned to its previous state.
Photographer John Sampson was so exhausted by this scene that he had already guessed the result, so he left with his guide to photograph other animals. As expected, when they returned, they found the lions and turtles had disappeared, and there was no trace of the lion’s successful hunting of the turtle left on the grass…
One is a fierce predator of the African savanna, and the other is a super-defensive little turtle. In the end, it ended with the turtle’s successful escape. Through this event, we can also see that the turtle’s longevity is not only due to its rare long-lived genes, but also its sturdy, indestructible armor protects its life.
