Yancheng Adds Another ‘National-Level’ Identity! This Area Now a National Wetland Park
On March 23rd,
The National Forestry and Grassland Administration issued a notification,
Yancheng Dadong Lake National Wetland Park
successfully passed the pilot acceptance and
officially became a National Wetland Park,
adding a ‘national-level’ ecological highlight to our city.
Dadong Lake National Wetland Park extends from the Dadong Lake Tourist Resort Ring Lake Avenue to the intersection of the South River and Bubhe Road with the 125 Provincial Road, south to the border between Yancheng and Taizhou, and connects with the Zhongbu Town of Taizhou Xinghua City, north to the 125 Provincial Road within the Dadong Lake Tourist Resort.

Comprising Dadong Lake and surrounding wetlands, with a total area of 1060 hectares, the park boasts unique natural landscapes, a complete ecological system structure, diverse vegetation, abundant species, especially the discovery of several rare and endangered bird species, including over 20 Tibetan Cuckoo, a national first-class protected animal, known as ‘the bird among living fossils’.Creating Dadong Lake National Wetland Park is an important node project following Yancheng’s successful application for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

In recent years, Dadong Lake Tourist Resort has adhered to the concept of ‘green water and mountains are gold and silver,’ consistently pursuing the synergistic development of wetland protection and tourism development, coordinating the advancement of wetland protection restoration and surrounding environmental remediation projects. Following the approval of Jiangsu Provincial Wetland Park in October 2015, a total of 420 million yuan has been invested in the protection and restoration of Dadong Lake wetlands and its surrounding environment, implementing projects such as return fishing and lake restoration, the dredging and widening of the Mang River, and the comprehensive restoration and reconstruction of Dadong Lake wetlands’ vegetation and wetland landscapes, showcasing the wetland scenery of ‘Dadong Lake – the First Lake of Sunan’.

Through the hosting of activities such as observing the Red-legged Night Heron and listening to the Bubhe Story, the park provides wetland science education and recreational opportunities for the citizens of Yancheng and surrounding areas, enhancing the wetland ecological tourism brand. By constructing hydrological and atmospheric monitoring stations and collaborating with universities and research institutions, the park provides technical support for wetland park management. By promoting community participation and co-management, the park has created a wetland ecological product brand, exploring the win-win model of wetland protection and social development.

Within Dadong Lake National Wetland Park, the landscapes are unique, the ecological system structure is complete, the vegetation is diverse and the species are abundant. There are 72 families of vascular plants, including 173 genera and 195 species, including the nationally Level II protected plant wild soybean, wild reed, lotus, and 27 orders of vertebrates, 67 families and 183 species, including 15 orders of birds, 44 families and 134 species, including 7 species of nationally Level II protected birds, 15 endangered bird species, including 1 critically endangered species, the Yellow-billed Slaty Shrike, known as ‘the bird among living fossils’.
