What is a Supermoon?
A Supermoon is a full moon when the moon is near its perigee. Because the moon orbits the Earth in an elliptical orbit, the distance between the moon and the Earth varies, approximately 350,000 kilometers at its closest and 400,000 kilometers at its farthest, a difference of 50,000 kilometers makes the moon appear larger. The perigee full moon is about 14% larger and 30% brighter than the full moon at its apogee. Therefore, the perigee full moon is also called 'Supermoon'.
There were four this year
Chinese Astronomical Society member, Tianjin Astronomical Society councilor Shi ZhiCheng introduced that there were four 'Supermoons' in 2020, namely on February 9th, March 10th, April 8th and May 7th, of which April 8th and March 10th were also the 'largest full moon' and 'second largest full moon' of the year.
