The busiest tunnel in Chongqing’s main city, with an average daily traffic volume of over 110,000 vehicles, is not the Zhongliangshan Tunnel.

Chongqing is a city of mountains, with one after another bridges across the river, giving Chongqing a unique urban landscape. However, the main city, in addition to having many cross-river bridges, also has multiple mountain-penetrating tunnels, which connect the main city and multiple new districts through these tunnels. However, with the maturity of more and more new districts, more and more mountain-penetrating tunnels are becoming increasingly busy during morning and evening peak hours. Today, let's go with the (shàjiàn – editor) to take a look at the busiest mountain-penetrating tunnels in Chongqing's main city.

When it comes to the busiest tunnel in Chongqing's main city, most people will probably think of the Zhongliangshan Tunnel, located in the western part of the main city. Because the Zhongliangshan Tunnel is an important transportation artery connecting the main city to the (yú xī – west) region and Chengdu. Next is the Da Xue Cheng (University Town) Tunnel and the Shuangbei (Double-Pied) Tunnel, as the University Town has developed rapidly in recent years, and these two tunnels are the main channels to the University Town, so they are very congested during morning and evening peak hours and it has become a common phenomenon.
However, according to data collected by authoritative institutions in 2017, the Jinwushan Tunnel connecting the main city and Cha Yu Xian (Tea Garden District) had an average daily traffic volume of 113,000 vehicles, making it the busiest tunnel in the main city. Next is the Zhongliangshan High-Speed Tunnel, with 89,000 vehicles, the Shuangbei Tunnel with 83,000 vehicles, the Quan Shan Tunnel with 83,000 vehicles, the Yu Wu High-Speed Tunnel in Beibei (North-Beibei) with 81,000 vehicles, and the Yu Su High-Speed Tunnel in Da Xue Cheng (University Town) with 71,000 vehicles.

Jinwushan Tunnel is a wide tunnel with two lanes in both directions, serving as a ring road connecting the south bank of the main city, Nan'an Qu (South-An District), with Cha Yu Xian (Tea Garden District), it's a key transportation route. In recent years, with the continuous development of Cha Yu Xian (Tea Garden District), the traffic pressure on the Jinwushan Tunnel has been increasing. Although Cha Yu Xian (Tea Garden District) currently has Nan Shan Tunnel, Ci Mu Shan Tunnel and Jinwushan Tunnel, with the rapid development of Lu GAO Xian (Lu GAO – Deer Horn) New District, the traffic pressure is still very large. Therefore, many residents living in Cha Yu Xian (Tea Garden District) and Lu GAO (Deer Horn) districts hope that the Jiangnan Tunnel and Lu GAO (Deer Horn) Tunnel can be constructed and built as soon as possible.

According to reports, the Jiangnan Tunnel connects to Fu Hong Road, passes through the Huang Land, passes through the Nan Shan area, and connects to Cha Yu Xing Tang Road (Cha Yu – Tea Garden) in Cha Yu Xian (Tea Garden District). The project investment is 170 million yuan, and the total length is 5 kilometers with two lanes in both directions. It's parallel to the existing Nan Shan Tunnel and Jinwushan Tunnel. In addition, Nan Shan will also have a new route to Cha Yu Xian (Tea Garden District) to Cha Huang Road (Cha Huang – Tea Yellow). The construction of the Jiangnan Tunnel will not only solve the congestion of four kilometers but also make Cha Yu Xian (Tea Garden District) the biggest beneficiary.
Over the years, because of the traffic inconvenience, although here is only separated by one mountain from Pan Ping (Pan Ping – Southern Plateau), the psychological distance is very far.
