Ueno Toshogu Shrine - Courtyard Serene, Towers Watchful, Carved Pillars and Painted Roofs, Picturesque and Spiritually Elegant
Located in the romantic Shinobazu Pond area of Ueno Park, Ueno Toshogu Shrine was built to commemorate Tokugawa Ieyasu. It was extensively rebuilt and expanded on the orders of the third and fourth shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu. Its lavish use of gold leaf gives it a rich, magnificent, and imposing appearance, reflecting the authority and grandeur of the Tokugawa shogunate.
The Ueno Toshogu Pond Garden is home to a spectacular display of winter peonies, often considered the 'Flower King.' These peonies are as beautiful and regal as the cherry blossoms that cover the trees. Li Bai famously wrote: 'Cloud-imagined garments, flower-imagined faces, spring breeze caresses the threshold, misty dew gathers.'
If you are fortunate enough to visit Ueno Park, don't miss this stately building with historical significance and the beautiful, opulent peonies that have been celebrated by poets throughout the ages.
